Business Direction

It is often said that to be successful an individual needs drive.  There are lots of dictionary definitions of the word drive depending on the context but in relation to the human mind definitions generally refer to a determination and energy to act with a sense of purpose.

It is important to understand that purpose.  Roy MacDonald’s D.R.I.V.E™ model is particularly useful in that regard.

Having a purpose and having a sense of direction suggest a need to control the direction of travel to arrive.

The STEER model has been developed based on many years of practical business experience and provides a structure and tools with which to confidently steer your business.

S

Strategy

You know where you want to go and why, but you need a model, a map, a broad outline of how you are going to get there.  You need a strategy.

T

Targets

You need to give each team, each individual a clear target to achieve.  Each target makes it clear how that role fits within the strategy and intermeshes with the other targets to achieve the overall goal.

E

Engage

The stakeholders need to buy in to what you are trying to achieve.  They don’t necessarily need to have the same goal as the organisation but so long as their objectives are aligned with what you want to achieve, they will be motivated to take the business forward.

E

Execute

Communicate, communicate, communicate.  Make sure everybody knows what is expected of them, publish roles and responsibilities as well as an organisation chart.  Create control systems that identify any processes not operating effectively or efficiently.

R

Review

Create a feedback loop.  Regularly check up on progress, don’t assume that just because you’ve told somebody what you expect that they will do it the way you expect them to.  Ensure you and your managers are guiding everybody towards their targets.
